Dochula Pass

One of the most well known passes in the country, Dochula Pass is a popular picnic spot and tourist stop. Located approximately 25 kilometers from the capital city of Thimphu, Dochula pass is located 3150 metres above sea-level along the highway to the Punakha Dzongkhag (or district), and is considered to be on the confluence of the three Dzongkhags of Punakha, Thimphu, and Wangdue. The Pass overlooks the northern-eastern territories of Bhutan, and on a clear day offers prestine views of the surrounding countryside, as well as the northern mountain ranges bordering the Tibetan plateau. From here, one can also see Mt. Gangkhar Puensum, a pure white-peaked mountain 7570 metres above sea-level considered to be the highest unclimbed mountain in the world. During the monsoon season, travellers can also enjoy a truly spectacular weather phenomoenon, as moisture-laden monsoon clouds descend from the heavens to the lower valley, especially early in the morning and late in the afternoons.

In 2003, the Queen Mother of the 05th King of Bhutan approved the construction of 108 chortens, inorder to honor the Bhutanese soldiers who were killed in the fight to expel a rogue group of Indian Rebels from Assam, in the southern districts of Bhutan. The chortens now serve as a sacred legacy of the nation and the Bhutanese people.
